Here, there was a partition table at the beginning of each disk, giving information about each partition, consisting of the location, size, and type. When splitting the disk up like this, or "partitioning", was first begun, it was limited to only having four primary partitions. So the disk was split up into partitions, each partition was given a different drive name, and the user would see these partitions as separate disks. The only cases where the disks aren`t set up like this today are for floppy disks, zip disks, basically: removable media.Īt this point, each partition can so much as have different operating systems and/or a different filesystem.

The solution to this was to split the disk up into partitions: this is how disk storage evolved into how it is today. The problem with that was that, as time progressed and disks became larger, that outdated, DOS-era, use of disks became more and more impractical.
